Beta-Alanine

Also known as: beta alanine, CarnoSyn

Grade A — Strong Evidenceamino acidperformance
36 gSplit doses throughout day (to minimize tingling). Full effects after 4-10 weeks of loading.

Beta-alanine is a non-essential amino acid that increases intramuscular carnosine concentrations, buffering hydrogen ions during high-intensity exercise. Meta-analyses consistently show improved exercise capacity for efforts lasting 1-4 minutes, making it particularly valuable for activities like rowing, swimming, and high-rep resistance training. The characteristic tingling sensation (paresthesia) is harmless and can be mitigated by using sustained-release formulations.

TL;DR: Increases muscle carnosine levels, buffering acid during high-intensity exercise. Well-supported for 1-4 min high-intensity efforts.

Evidence Rating: Grade A — Strong Evidence

Multiple high-quality RCTs, systematic reviews, or meta-analyses with consistent findings.

TaurineLow

Competes with taurine for uptake. Consider supplementing both if using long-term.

Important Notes

  • Causes harmless paresthesia (tingling) at higher single doses
  • Split doses to reduce tingling
  • CarnoSyn sustained-release reduces paresthesia
