GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. While debate exists about whether oral GABA crosses the blood-brain barrier effectively, the PharmaGABA form (produced by fermentation) has shown benefits for relaxation, sleep quality, and stress reduction in RCTs. GABA may also exert effects through the enteric nervous system and gut-brain axis, which could explain its efficacy despite limited BBB penetration.
