L-Carnitine is an amino acid derivative essential for transporting long-chain fatty acids into mitochondria for energy production. The acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR) form crosses the blood-brain barrier and has evidence for cognitive support, neuroprotection, and antidepressant effects. L-Carnitine L-Tartrate is the preferred form for exercise performance and recovery, while propionyl-L-carnitine has the most evidence for cardiovascular and peripheral artery disease.
