Lutein
Also known as: lutein, lutein and zeaxanthin
Recommended Dosage
10–20 mg
Lutein is a carotenoid that accumulates in the macula of the eye, forming macular pigment that filters harmful blue light and protects against oxidative damage. The landmark AREDS2 trial demonstrated that lutein (10mg) plus zeaxanthin (2mg) reduced the risk of advanced age-related macular degeneration progression. Emerging research also suggests cognitive benefits, as lutein accumulates in brain tissue and is associated with improved processing speed and memory.
TL;DR: Carotenoid concentrated in the retina and brain. Strong evidence for eye health; emerging evidence for cognitive function.
