Ginkgo Biloba
Also known as: maidenhair tree, EGb 761
Recommended Dosage
120–240 mg
Ginkgo biloba is one of the most extensively studied herbal supplements, primarily used for cognitive enhancement and cerebrovascular health. Its active compounds — flavone glycosides and terpene lactones — improve blood flow to the brain and exhibit neuroprotective antioxidant effects. While the large GEM trial found no benefit for preventing dementia, smaller trials show improvements in cognitive function for those with existing mild impairment, and consistent evidence supports benefits for peripheral circulation.
TL;DR: Increases cerebral blood flow and has vasodilatory effects. Modest benefit for existing dementia symptoms but does not prevent it.
