Red yeast rice is produced by fermenting rice with Monascus purpureus yeast and naturally contains monacolin K, which is chemically identical to lovastatin. Clinical trials demonstrate LDL cholesterol reductions of 15-25%, comparable to low-dose statins. However, monacolin K content varies dramatically between products, and some contain the nephrotoxic mycotoxin citrinin — third-party tested products are essential. It carries the same interaction and side effect profile as statin medications.
